What is Sound Testing?

Sound testing within residential environments usually refers to the measuring of the sound insulation performance of the separating party walls and/or floors for compliance with building regulations. Compliance with sound testing requirements of the building regulations is considered to provide a reasonable level of sound insolation from typical neighbouring residential noise sources. The sound testing and insulation performance standards for separating party wall/floors are detailed in Approved Document E (ADE) of the building regulations.

A greater or less stringent level of sound insulation for the party walls/floors within an industrial/commercial environment may be considered suitable, with reference to the minimum sound insulation requirements specified for residential environments in Approved Document E (ADE).

What are Noise Surveys?

Noise surveys will involve at least one measurement of the existing external/internal noise climate. The data gathered can be used to specify suitable building envelopment construction details to control the ingress of unwanted external sounds into the building. Internal noise measurements, amongst other things may be used to identify/quantify unwanted internal noise sources and derive suitable noise control solutions.
